RAMSES

What is it?

  • A rapid satellite flyby mission targeting 99942 Apophis
  • 99942 Apophis is a potentially hazardous asteroid
  • Diameter about 370 metres
  • On April 13, 2029 it passes between Earth and geosynchronous satellites
  • Unique event!

RAMSES

Why care?

  • Planetary defense! (yes that's a real thing!)
  • Asteroid research -
    • origins of solar system
    • structure and composition of our environment
    • fundamental physical processes and interactions
    • ...
  • ...

RAMSES

(and Ground support!)

IRF involvement

  • Deliver some components to satellite (SSPT - ask Stas)
  • Enable and conduct EISCAT 3D observations of Apophis (STAR - me!)
  • Use data to do science!

RAMSES

(and Ground support!)

Background: EISCAT

RAMSES

(and Ground support!)

  • EISCAT_3D is new high-power large-aperture phased-array radar
  • 233 MHz (1.3 m wavelength) - unique frequency
  • I did a study that showed we should be able to observe asteroids
  • Next steps is to develop the experiment and analysis, and estimate what data we can actually extract and what questions that can address

NOSTRA

  • Novel approach: phased-array and multi-static
  • Capacity increases by a factor of 50-150 with a factor of ~3 in cost
  • Fast enough to measure "all" objects within FoV
  • Three transmitters $\mapsto$
system redundancy, higher accuracy, and mono-static operations for each site possible
  • Nordic location $\mapsto$ existing infrastructure, polar orbits, "science park"
  • Contribute to both space traffic management, security, and research!
